Key Points:

  • N60S/IMP -  60 Minute Fire & Smoke Seal.
  • For protecting double doors
  • BS476 part 22.
  • A fire and smoke seal from Sealmaster.
N60S/IMP is a two-part combined intumescent fire and smoke seal, specifically designed for FD60S fire and smoke-resisting double door assemblies.

The seal comprises two opposing extruded aluminium alloy profiles - N60S and IMP - each with twin reservoirs which contain substantial reserves of Sealmaster intumescent material. At the head and hanging stiles N60S is used on its own. The flame-retardant elastomeric blade in N60S provides the smoke-control function required of all doors designated by the suffix 'S' in Building Regulations Approved Document B.

In new doorsets, both profiles are rebated into the centre of opposing door edges at meeting stiles. Where N60S/IMP is fitted to an existing door assembly, the stiles of the door are easily rebated. The seal is interrupted at the lock/latch striker plate and pivot positions, and protection at these points is is provided by Sealmaster Intumescent Plugs for 60 minute doors.

Normal Use
In normal use, the elastomeric blade seals the gap between the doors, and acts as an efficient draught seal.

The N60S seal has been assessed by TRADA as capable of providing 60 minutes integrity when used in conjunction with the IMP seal.

Certification/Fire Test Reports:

  • N60S/IMP fire and smoke seals have been tested and approved by Certifire to conform to BS476 part 22. This is the most demanding 3rd party certification scheme in the industry.
  • As the fire develops, the elastomeric blade provides a barrier to the passage of smoke and hot gases. Once the fire reaches the N60S/IMP seal, the intumescent material foams, swells and fills the gaps between the doors. Since the foam remains soft during the period of intumescent action, it exerts minimal pressure, allowing the doors to remain in their original positions.

We have technical representatives who provide assistance in the selection and specification of the products on this site and should be consulted for exact installation and product suitability. Ensure an early engagement with ourselves, designers, main contractor and specialist installers before any installation. Other trades and/or manufacturers may need to be consulted. For in-depth information, specification and technical advice please call our Head Office on Tel: +(0)1329 841416 or email

All interested parties, designer, specifier, main contractor and specialist installers should provide access to allow the fire stopping seals to be regularly inspected and maintained, as well as records kept of such maintenance at minimum periods of 12 months, as required by the Regulatory Reform Order, and repaired if necessary. Reference should be made to ASFP TGD 17 Code of Practice for the Installation and Inspection of Fire Stopping.

It is vital that those entrusted to design or install a fire stopping product have the necessary levels of competence to undertake the task professionally and thoroughly. The level of competency required will be commensurate with the expected complexity of the building. All designers must eliminate, reduce or control foreseeable risks that may arise during installation, construction or maintenance when preparing or modifying designs. Clients should ensure that the principal designer and principal contractor carry out their duties under CDM regulations. The ASFP foundation course in passive fire protection provides essential knowledge as part of demonstrating competency and understanding in this key fire protection specialism.
